The Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 is identical to the Ultra Carbon and the old version of the Ultra Carbon DEF in terms of veneer combination.
The blade consists of a total of 5 plies and 2 carbon layers with an overall thickness of approximately 6.1 mm. The outer veneers are made of limba, the intermediate veneers of koto, and the core veneer of ayous. The carbon layers are made of carbon fleece, the thinnest and softest type of carbon.
However, the handles are now made of solid hinoki. As a result, the Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 is on average about 2 g heavier than the Ultra Carbon DEF, but the weight distribution is less head-heavy and the handles are generally a bit sturdier.
We have also found that handles made of solid hinoki are best for material players - and this wood is targeted at this audience.
The Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 offers you all the advantages of a carbon blade: it is exceptionally controlled and forgiving of technically imperfect shots.
The Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 also offers what you previously could not expect from a carbon blade: a soft and rather gentle ball feel. The ability to effectively play passive strokes such as chop. And optimal elasticity, which promotes not only powerful offensive strokes but also play with maximum spin. The Ultra Carbon DEF is therefore only slightly stiffer than similarly fast blades without carbon.
The Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 is perfectly suited for all types of specialty rubbers, whether short or long pips, or even antis of all kinds. It can significantly increase the disruptive effect and has convinced many players who would otherwise not use carbon blades.
However, it is not intended for players who use inverted rubbers on both sides. This also results from the significantly enlarged hitting surface (approximately 162 x 155 mm). Although the Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 is by no means slow - it is even faster than many of our all-round blades - it remains clearly a defensive blade.
The Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 is the right blade for modern defensive play: attack with an offensive rubber on the forehand side, disrupt with "material" on the backhand side. The classic chop defense is also very well possible in combination with the right long pips, such as the SpinLord Agenda.
It should be noted that the Ultra Carbon DEF 2021 plays very linearly. It does not offer a damping effect in passive play like balsa blades, but it is much more predictable in its playing behavior. From experience, lower-level players often prioritize the damping effect, while professionals generally do not use balsa blades because predictability in all playing situations is of absolute priority for them.
The Ultra Carbon DEF has already been used by 3 players in the top 400 in the world (all players using long pips on the backhand and attacking with a fast offensive rubber on the forehand), and the new 2021 version will surely continue this success story seamlessly.
